Sieur de Monts Spring is a perfect place for a peaceful walk or just enjoying nature. The Wild Gardens in Sieur de Monts are also known as the “heart” of Acadia and consist of a Springhouse and an Abbe Museum. The Wild Gardens are gorgeous with lots of trees, plants, ferns, flowers, and walking paths perfect for hiking.

Sieur de Monts is a title given to Pierre Dugua who was a French explorer. And George B. Dorr named the spring after him. The history of Acadia is nothing short of wonder. First, the Sieur de Monts National Monument was established, and then the monument’s name changed to Lafayette National Park, now known as the famous Acadia National Park

The Abbe Museum is perfect for understanding the rich Maine’s Native American Culture. It also lets us explore the history and archaeology of the area through many educational programs and exhibitions. It has over 50,000 objects that represent the life of Native Americans.

What to Know

You would love the quiet and peaceful atmosphere of this place. The gardens are gorgeous there with lush trees and the running spring water is very clear. Just walk through the trees and you will come across wetlands. If you’re visiting in the fall, then you will experience the beautiful tree foliage with various colors of yellow, red, and orange in bloom.

Another great thing about the Sieur de Monts is the Nature Center. It serves as a memorial to George Bucknam Dorr, known for his work toward the creation of Acadia National Park. George B. Dorr oversaw the beauty and potential of Mount Desert Island and the need for its conservation, hence the creation of Acadia National Park.

At the springhouse, you’ll find a nearby rock carved with the inscription “Sweet Waters of Acadia”. The Spring is open all year round and is located 2 miles south of Bar Harbor.

Also, you won’t want to miss out on the Abbe Museum. A place representing the rich culture of Native Americans and their history. It has many educational programs and exhibitions for the sole purpose of preserving and celebrating the heritage of all four native communities in Maine. The 50,000 objects in the museum represent the 10,000 years of life of Native Americans in Maine. It’s a nonprofit institution dedicated to preserving the history of the Native Wabanaki in Maine.
