The Scottish Exodus

In 1772, religious persecution in Scotland prompted many Catholics to seek refuge in the New World. Many settled in Scotchfort, about 20 km east of Charlottetown. These settlers were initially without a priest until Father Angus Bernard MacEachern arrived in 1790. Father MacEachern’s arrival marked a pivotal time in the island’s Catholic history. Serving a vast region from PEI to Cape Breton, he crafted a small horse-drawn vessel to navigate the challenging terrain, a practical solution that helped him administer to his parishioners.

 

Rise to a Cathedral

In 1829, Charlottetown became the seat of the Diocese of Charlottetown, the second English-speaking diocese in Canada.
