What to Know
Nepean Point is located in the heart of Ottawa, Ontario, just steps behind the National Gallery of Canada. It sits atop a hill overlooking the Ottawa River and presents one of the prettiest views in the city. From this position, you can view some of the city's iconic landmarks, for example, Parliament Buildings, Major's Hill Park, and the pedestrian walkway linking different parts of the city. The elevated position has been a favorite among photographers, tourists, and locals for decades.
Managed by the National Capital Commission (NCC), Nepean Point has been upgraded in recent times to enhance accessibility and the visitor experience. The site is now universally accessible, offering every visitor a chance to enjoy the view. Plans for future development, including the transformation into Kìwekì Point, will integrate Algonquin voices and culture, making it a cultural and historical site for reflection.
Some of the most important attractions include the giant statue of Samuel de Champlain, a French explorer, famous for his exploration of Canada. He holds an astrolabe high; it represents Ottawa's formative history. Standing next to him is the Anishinabe Scout, an emblem of the Algonquin nation and their persistence on the land.
The adjacent Astrolabe Theatre is another venue that hosts performances and events under the stars. It is open to tourists as well. If you are into history, and culture, or simply want a great view of the city, Nepean Point is perfect for you.
History
Nepean Point has been around for hundreds of years, and its history goes back to its being designated as part of Ottawa's capital region. It was even named after the British civil servant Sir Evan Nepean and was developed into a scenic viewpoint during the late 19th century. Its prime spot overlooking the Ottawa River and Parliament Hill made it an iconic spot in the city.
The statue of Samuel de Champlain was erected in 1915 to commemorate the exploration and settlement of the Ottawa region.
The National Capital Commission has collaborated with Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg and other Algonquin groups to include Indigenous culture and voices in the site. This is to pay homage to the deeper roots of the area and its significance to the Algonquin people, who call the region Kìwekì Point.

How to Get There
Nepean Point is centrally situated in Ottawa and readily accessible from nearly any location. It is within walking distance from the ByWard Market and the National Gallery of Canada. If you are driving, there are parking lots nearby, but usually, the best strategy is to walk or bike and enjoy the scenery along the way.
For public transportation, OC Transpo buses will often stop in front of the National Gallery of Canada. It's then a short walk to the entrance of Nepean Point. The pedestrian bridge from one of the main areas near the Ottawa River also offers a handy path for those walking there.
Best Time to Visit
When one should come to Nepean Point differs from person to person. I’d say the best times to visit are in the morning or evening. You can walk around in the morning or enjoy the breathtaking scenery while the sun sets over the Ottawa River during the evening. If you’re a photography enthusiast, the hour immediately following dawn or preceding dusk, also known as the golden hour, is the ideal period for picture-perfect panoramas.
In terms of seasons, given their temperate climate, people are more drawn to this area in spring and summer. Picnics and leisurely walks become extremely inviting with warmer weather and blooming greens. The autumn season is also extremely beautiful, with the trees in the region turning to intense colors of orange and red. In this season, the region is comparatively quiet, enabling you to enjoy the atmosphere.
Nepean Point with its blanket of snow has a different kind of beauty to offer in winter. The frozen Ottawa River is awe-inspiring, complimented by the tranquility, making the snow-canopied terrain feel surreal. Nonetheless, you should actively seek to avoid the icy areas and dress in warm clothing. No matter which season you visit, Nepean points guarantee to leave a lasting impression.
