The Elms Mansion was built as a summer home for Edward Julius Berwind, a coal baron at the turn of the 19th century. Upon Edward’s death, the home was left to his sister, Julia, who was dedicated to preservation of the home as it was. Upon her death in 1961, the home was one of the last Newport cottages to be run in the style of the Gilded Age.
