History

Trinity Church has a glorious history dating back to 1697, which was the year it received a charter by King William III of England. The first original church building was erected in 1698 on Wall Street opposite the Hudson River. It was a simple rectangle with a gambrel roof and a small porch. Unfortunately, it was razed during the Fire of 1776 during the Revolutionary War.

 

The construction of the second Trinity Church started in 1788 and it finished in 1790. People used to worship in the St. Paul's Chapel while the new church was being built. The new church was 200 feet tall and stood opposite Wall Street. It was much longer and wider than the first church. It was remarkable, not only because of its size but also because President Washington and his government worshiped there.

 

The church you see today was reconstructed in 1846, and designed by the famous architect Richard Upjohn. Its high Gothic Revival spire, holding a gilded cross at the top, became an icon of the skyline of lower Manhattan. For some time, Trinity Church was the tallest building in New York City and remained so until the New York World Building took over in 1890. Similarly, it was the tallest building in the United States until 1869, when it was surpassed by St. Michael's Church.

 

Over the years, several important visitors have come to Trinity Church. The most significant visit occurred on July 10, 1976, when Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, visited as part of a major tour of the United States of America.

Trinity Church is accessible to visitors throughout the year, but it does get quite crowded during the spring and fall seasons, which are peak tourist seasons. The church conducts Mass every Sunday morning. Therefore, if you are interested in exploring and learning more about its history, it's better to go after 12:05 p.m. on Sundays. Weekdays are also the best to visit the church if you want a quiet experience.
