What to Know

Halifax Farmers Market first originated in 1750 and was used to sell fresh produce and deliver livestock. Back then, it was called the meat or cattle market and was created by Royal Proclamation. The first site for the market is now the location for the Bank of Montreal building. The market has its significance mainly because it was created a year after Halifax was founded and also it is the oldest running market in North America. Over the years, the market has changed and operated in different locations all over the city. In 2010, the market was moved to the Halifax Seaport and now it is known as Halifax Seaport Farmers Market.

The best thing about the market is its friendly neighborhood and the strong community. The atmosphere here is quite welcoming and amazing. It extends from Pier 19 to 23 and opens every weekend for a few hours. The food here is delicious and you can find fresh produce, fish, meat, baked goods, and dairy products. The indoor market is perfect for enjoying your food and enjoying coffee. The patio seating here, with gorgeous waterfront views, is the perfect way to spend your day. As the market operates for a few hours, you’ll have to be careful about the time. Because you don’t want to be late and miss out on amazing food.

On Saturdays, the market opens at 8 a.m. sharp and it’s a perfect time to enjoy some baked goods and freshly brewed coffee. From cinnamon buns to scones, sourdough bread to pastries, you’ll find everything here. There are plenty of places in the market that sell freshly baked goods including German Bakery, Nico Bakes, Aly Mae’s Bread Basket, etc.

You can also find street food here from around the world including steamed buns, dumplings, kebabs, etc. If you’re in the mood for something fresh, then definitely try the smoothie bowls here. They’re naturally sweet, refreshing, and simply delicious. You can find Indian food here as well. Check out Amin’s Indian cuisine, which is famous for their samosas and curries.

If you’re in the mood for making your own breakfast, then you can grab artisanal cheeses, homemade jams, fresh eggs, and of course, sourdough—because breakfast is incomplete without sourdough bread. For maritime Gourmet Mushrooms, you can get shiitake and oyster mushrooms.

For freshest fruits and vegetables, Noggins Corner Farm Market is your best option. They sell fresh and delicious seasonal fruits and vegetables. It’s the best place for strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, apples, etc. You can find almost anything here. For fresh meats and seafood, arrive early and you’ll find perfectly packed and neatly cut meats. The market also has a variety of seafood options available. You can find salmon, mussels, oysters, etc. If you want to taste the various delights of this market, the best way to do so is by booking A Guided Halifax Tour which will take you to different places from the Farmers Market to Citadel Hill, all in just $109!

If you love cute mugs, you’ll find plenty of them here. The market mostly has food vendors, but you can find many vendors selling handmade crafts, including jewelry and ceramics. For warm and cozy sweaters, Wool Things sells the best sweaters, blankets, cushions, etc. All of these things are perfect gifts for your loved ones. There is also an organic skincare collection at the market named Osha Mae. The clay masks, serums, balms, everything is really good. For scented candles, visit Lawrencetown Candle Co., where you can find delicious fruit-scented candles.

How to Get There

As the market is located at 1209 Marginal Road, right along the waterfront, you can conveniently take your car there. It’ll take you 7 minutes to reach there from downtown by taking Queen Street and Terminal Road. It is also the fastest way to get there. You can easily find parking lots there but sometimes parking can be a bit of a challenge. So, maybe consider using public transit or walking to avoid parking scramble.

Another option is public transport, where you can have a ride on the bus that’ll take you to Barrington Street. From there, you’ll have to walk to the farmers market, which will take you around 7-8 minutes. You’ll have to hop on bus 29 at Hollis Street to get to the market.

If you prefer walking, then you can walk there from downtown. You can follow along Brunswick Street, Spring Garden Road, and then Barrington Street. But it’ll take you around half an hour to reach the market on foot. Also, the market is fully wheelchair accessible, making it easier for those with mobility issues. It is equipped with many ramps, wide aisles, and accessible restrooms.

Our favorite way to get to the market is by booking a Peggy's Cove Small-Group Tour, which features a visit to this attraction and other beautiful hotspots of Halifax, plus a delicious dinner at Sou' Wester Restaurant!

Best Time to Visit

Any time is a great time to visit the Farmers Market, or to book a Halifax Tour! Timing can make or break your visit to the Seaport Farmers Market. It’s not just about avoiding the crowds, although that’s part of it. It’s about knowing when to catch the freshest goods, the liveliest atmosphere, and the best opportunities to chat with the vendors who are often more than happy to share their stories.

For those seeking a quieter, more relaxed experience, mornings tend to be your best bet. The market opens early, and the early birds usually get the pick of the freshest produce and baked goods. This time is also perfect if you want to talk to vendors without the rush, allowing you to learn more about where your food comes from and how it's made.

However, if you’re after a bustling, high-energy atmosphere, then you can arrive a little late on weekends. Saturdays, in particular, are the market’s prime time and usually the busiest. This is when it’s most packed, with every vendor in full swing and live entertainment often filling the air. It’s the perfect time for socializing, taking in the vibrant mix of sights and sounds, and enjoying everything the market has to offer in its full glory.

No matter when you visit, though, the Seaport Farmers Market offers something special for everyone. The key is knowing what kind of experience you're after and timing your trip accordingly. We recommend booking an Exclusive Private Tour of Halifax featuring the Halifax Farmers Market for the best possible experience!
