Savannah City Market is considered the heart of Savannah, dating to the 1700s. The location used to serve as a place for locals to gather for groceries, services and other goods. The market thrived even after two fires, survived the Civil War and weathered Savannah’s great 1896 hurricane—only to fall into disrepair as the population and commerce spread out. Today, it has been preserved to now feature some of the Historic District’s most popular restaurants, art galleries, and other shops.
